How to Read a Supplement Label: A Buyer's Guide

Supplement labels are dense, and it’s easy to skim past the details that actually matter. Here’s what’s worth slowing down for before buying anything.

Check the Actual Dose, Not Just the Ingredient

An ingredient being listed doesn’t tell you much on its own. Compare the dose per serving against the amounts used in published clinical research on that ingredient. Many products include “proprietary blends” that obscure individual ingredient amounts entirely, making it impossible to know if you’re getting a clinically meaningful dose.

Look for Purity and Form

Some compounds occur naturally in multiple forms, and not all forms are equally studied or bioavailable. Purified, standardized extracts are generally more reliable than “whole food” claims that don’t specify concentration.

Third-Party Testing

Labels claiming non-GMO, third-party tested, or manufactured in a certified facility offer some assurance of quality control, though it’s worth verifying these claims when possible rather than taking them at face value.

Watch for Vague Claims

“Boosts energy” or “supports vitality” are vague enough to mean almost anything. Look for language tied to specific, studied mechanisms, like mitochondrial support or biogenesis, rather than broad wellness buzzwords.

A few extra minutes reading past the front-of-label claims usually reveals whether a product is backed by real research or just good marketing.
